| National Paralympic Team for Cross Country Skiing and Biathlon |
Monica joined the U.S. Ski Team in 2004 after winning a silver medal at her first-ever international skiing competition in Oford, Quebec. Since joining the team under Head Coach, John Kreamelmeyer, Monica prepared for the Paralympic Games in Torino, Italy in 2006 where she was the best-placed American woman in the middle and long distance ski races. Along the way, Monica picked-up the sport of Biathlon, which combines the gruelling activity of cross country skiing with the precision of shooting. Unlike Biathlon in the [abled-bodied] Olympic movement, the sport is combined with skiing in the Paralympics. Monica is currently working with the U.S. Ski Team coaching staff to prepare for the Paralympic Games in Vancouver, 2010 in both skiing and Biathlon. The challenge for both Monica and her coaches is to bounce back and regain her fitness after the birth of her son, Henry, in July 2007. She is in good hands however as all of her coaches have children of their own -- even some new ones on the way -- and many of her teammates also have children, which makes the team very family-oriented.
